Our version of The Masters

It was a heck of a weekend here at Whisky Run Golf Club where the Whisky Run Open recorded some record performances from past and new Masters Champions all vying for the coveted Green Scarf.

“The weather looked a bit iffy – but didn’t scare off our field of 92 players”
Event Manager, Jessica Dobbs said.
“It turned out to be a great early Spring day – a bit chilly, but great golfing weather.”

The course was in fine form for the opening event of the season. Superintendent Kevin Nieuwland and his team worked overtime to make sure the course was up to par for our Master’s inspired tournament. With all of the rain the past couple of weeks, some areas of the course saw a lot of growth, so they were busy cutting fairways and greens until late Friday night – and all of their work definitely paid off. The maintenance department got a jubilant round of applause from all the guests during the Master’s Dinner. Out on the course, the two person teams had a chance to win some prizing with course competitions.

Closest to the Pin for the Ladies went to Kathy Morningstar while the Men’s Closest to the Pin was won by Zack Gagnon. Michelle Fraser secured the Ladies Longest Drive and the Men’s Long Drive was won by Brian Friedlein.

Teams had to vie for a Closest in 2 Shots competition on Fox #3 and Serpent #3, with the former going to Gord Tellier & PJ Bolger and the latter to the infamous team of Lou Nieuwland and birthday boy (celebrating 75!) Darryl MacMicken.

The field scores varied between the low 90’s down to the mid 60’s. Listed below are the 2017 Whisky Run Open Masters Champions and Green Scarf Winners:

  • Ladies Division – Kathy Jamieson & Pat Legault (74)
  • Mixed Division – Troy & Michelle Fraser (65)
  • Men’s Division – Rolly Miljus & George Callura (65)

Capping off the exciting day on the links was the Masters Inspired Banquet Dinner. Each year, Chef Ashley Gibbs puts on the dinner featured at the Masters Champions Dinner held at Augusta. This year, 2016 Masters winner Danny Willet, chose a traditional Prime Rib roast. Ashley did her research on this English dish (right down the same seasonal vegetables) to everyone’s delight.

Whisky Run member Lynn Howard exclaimed it “was the best meal she [had] ever had at the course” Ashley really outdid herself with this one!

Considering two out of the last three years Bubba Watson served up his favourite Grilled Chicken and Baked Macaroni & Cheese – participants really got their money’s worth with Mr. Willet’s choices this year!

Congratulations to all the 2017 Whisky Run Open Masters Champions – and to Mr. Sergio Garcia with his exciting win at Augusta this year! We are definitely looking forward to a Spanish inspired dinner at next year’s Whisky Run Open.
